Project summary
We’re thrilled to announce the completion of a new inclusive playground at Hamilton's beloved Gregson Park, originally designed by Alfred Sharp in 1884. This upgrade honours the park’s Indigenous heritage while meeting the recreational needs of the local community. The playground and amenities building has been designed to be accessible for all, ensuring that everyone can enjoy this cherished space.
Project completion
We are delighted to welcome the community back into this playground, with the site re-opened on Friday 4 October 2024. Thank you to all who attended our free community event on 8 October 2024.
What's been delivered
The creation of the new inclusive playspace at Hamilton’s historic Gregson Park, is a significant element of City of Newcastle’s adopted Masterplan for the much-loved precinct.
The new playspace includes equipment for a range of ages and abilities, including a six-metre-high climbing tower, trampolines and a balance obstacle course, as well as a softfall mound with slides, rope and rock-climbing elements.
In addition to the traditional play equipment, the playground also features a range of accessible and nature-based play options, with traditional Indigenous elements including a yarning circle to encourage knowledge sharing, and a bush tucker garden to enrich learning and awareness of native edible plants.
Additional shade, formal and informal seating, and footbridges are also features of the project, complemented by an upgraded, accessible amenities building and new covered picnic and BBQ area. The accessible amenities building includes five new toilets, two of these ambulant and one new fully accessible toilet.
Community consultation
Following extensive consultation with the community, schools and focus groups, City of Newcastle adopted the Gregson Park Masterplan and associated Heritage Places Plan of Management in 2021. The concept plan for the playspace element of the Masterplan was placed on public exhibition in late 2022.
Gregson Park Masterplan
The development of the new Gregson Park playground and upgraded amenities was a key component of our Masterplan for the area. The Masterplan is being implemented over a 10-year period and subject to budget. The Masterplan identifies both short- and long-term priorities.
