History and Heritage
City of Newcastle respects and acknowledges those who came before us, the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters on which our city is built, and all of those who have contributed to the city of Newcastle.
We work with our community to identify, protect, support and promote our city's rich and diverse cultural heritage, so that it can be appreciated today and by future generations. Heritage consists of those places and objects, including private and public buildings, parks and memorials, records and stories with special historical, cultural, social, architectural, archaeological, natural or aesthetic value. Our heritage gives us a sense of living history and provides a physical link to the work and way of life of previous generations. It enriches our lives and helps us understand who we are today.
Our Heritage Strategy (PDF) gives an overview of City of Newcastle’s approach to managing and regulating cultural heritage in Newcastle. It is based on the principles and processes of the Burra Charter and best practice.
