Road Naming

Residents may request for an unnamed roadway to be named for the purpose of improving wayfinding and to allow for the allocation of address numbers to the roadway.

On occasion, there may be cause to rename a roadway that is already named. However, changing an established road name will only be considered if there is a practical reason for doing so. For example, if the existing road name is causing confusion for delivery or emergency services.

Please note that submitting a road naming request does not guarantee that the request will be approved.

Some developments may require roads to be named before new addresses can be allocated. This is usually included as a condition of consent for the development application.

In approving new road names, CN follows the guidelines set down in the GNB's NSW Addressing Policy. In making an application for road naming, you may wish to suggest potential names in accordance with this policy.

Some key criteria for the selection of road names include:

• Road names are not to be duplicated, or be too similar to, existing names within a 10 km radius. The GNB's Road Name Evaluation website can be used to check for eligibility.
• Road names should have relevance to the local heritage, culture, environment or industry.
• Road names with a local Aboriginal dimension are encouraged but must be supported by the local Aboriginal community.
• For road names commemorating a person:
  • The person should have contributed significantly to the area.
  • The person must have been deceased for at least 12 months.
  • An effort should be made to gain consent from family members of the person.

Note that there is a fee associated with the road naming application in accordance with CN's Fees and Charges, which must be paid prior to CN seeking approval of the proposed road names from the GNB.

Following approval of the road names by CN and the GNB, CN is required to advertise the proposed names for a period of 15 business days, during which time members of the public are invited to make comment on the proposed names. Following a successful submission process, CN will seek formal gazettal of the names from the GNB.

Once the new road names are finalised, CN can allocate new addresses to affected properties where required. The installation of new street name signage for public roads is arranged by CN and will incur additional fees in accordance with CN's Fees and Charges.
