For flood safety information, including what to do before, during and after a flood, check out the 'Be prepared' section below.

Flooding affects up to one third of all properties in Newcastle, so it's important to be aware of your flood risk at home, work, school and other places you visit frequently. It can also occur quickly - sometimes there is less than an hour of warning between the beginning of a storm and the onset of flooding.

Be prepared - know what to do before, during and after a flood.

For current information about flooding and other emergencies, download the Hazards Near Me NSW app. The app can send you push notifications when there are new incidents or when information changes.

Know your flood risk

Knowing your flood risk, having a simple plan, and taking the time to discuss it with your neighbours can make a big difference during emergencies.

Click on the link below to check out our flood information viewer and get a better understanding of your flood risk. Information on the flood map includes the following:

  • The 1% AEP flood represents a flood 1% chance of occuring in any year. This is a large but rare flood. It was previously known as the 1 in 100 year flood. The 2007 Pasha Bulker flood was similar in size to a 1% flash flood event.
  • The PMF (probable maximum flood) is the largest flood that NSW guidelines recommend identifying to understand local flood risk. It is an extreme flood. Properties within the PMF are classified as flood prone land and DCP controls apply.

Considering lodging a Development Application?

To keep people and property safe, City of Newcastle applies flood management controls to properties that are identified as flood prone land (partially or fully within the PMF extent).

To manage risk to property, controls are based on flood behaviour for the 1% AEP in 2050 and to manage risk to life, controls are based on flood behaviour in the PMF. Detailed information on flood behaviour at your property required to support your development application is available in a Flood Information Certificate.
