Expressions of Interest: Aboriginal Cultural Knowledge Holders
Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Study for the Newcastle Local Government Area
City of Newcastle (CN) invites Aboriginal persons or organisations who may have an interest or hold knowledge of cultural significance of Aboriginal story(ies), object(s) and/or place(s) in the land, sky and waters of the Newcastle Local Government Area (LGA), to register their interest in participating in the consultation process for the preparation of an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Study for this area.
The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Study is an important part of the Newcastle Citywide Heritage Study. It aims to provide a better understanding of the Aboriginal cultural heritage of the Newcastle LGA including its history, archaeology, and culturally significant places, and identify ways to strengthen recognition, protection and management into the future. It will replace the 2005 Aboriginal Heritage Study.6
The study area (Newcastle LGA) has a total land area of 186.8 sq kms. It is bounded by the suburbs of Tarro, Hexham, Kooragang and Stockton in the north, Newcastle East, Newcastle, The Hill, Bar Beach and Merewether in the east, Adamstown Heights, Kotara, New Lambton Heights, Rankin Park and Elermore Vale in the south, Wallsend, Minmi, Lenaghan, Black Hill and Beresfield in the west.
For more information, including a map of the Newcastle LGA, please visit CN’s Newcastle Citywide Heritage Study project webpage.
To register your interest, please respond in writing, with a list of any relevant Aboriginal people/organisations who should be consulted with respect to this project:
