Bike week celebrates future on two wheels
15 Sept 2017
Newcastle City Council will celebrate Bike Week 2017 with the 17th annual free community breakfast for cyclists next week.
Rolling from tomorrow to Sunday 24 September, Bike Week is a NSW Government initiative that promotes cycling as a healthy and environmentally friendly way of getting around for short trips.
"Council is committed to making cycling a safe and attractive transport option for Novocastrians, and this year we are spending $2.4 million on increasing safe links around the city," Newcastle City Council Interim CEO Jeremy Bath said.
"We are fully committed to the expansion and upgrade of the network, in addition to cycling advocacy, promotion and education.
"Riding a bike is a great way to travel, save money, keep fit and is often faster than other modes of transport."
Riders can enjoy a free brekkie, coffee and prize give-aways at the Lambton Park event on Sunday 24 September from 9am to 12noon.
Cycling resources will be handed out and bicycle safety checks performed.
Free guided rides exploring local bike routes on shared paths and quiet, low-traffic streets will also be led by ride leaders from Metro Cycles on the day. These rides suit beginner and intermediate riders. Register via Eventbrite.
