Bold and adventurous Season 2018 announced for Civic Theatre Newcastle
15 Nov 2017
The Civic Theatre Newcastle today launched Season 2018, a carefully curated selection of fresh, bold and adventurous shows that make this upcoming season one of the theatre's finest to date.
Season 2018 offers a wide range of productions including old favourites, new experiences and contemporary stories that reflect the issues of our time.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes invited the community to come along to some of the Season performances and join in the adventure.
"Newcastle is a community that embraces the arts in all its forms and live theatre is a major thread in our city's cultural fabric. We deserve to have the best in live performance brought to our doorstep and the Civic Theatre's Season 2018 does just this with a fantastic mixture of dance, drama, comedy, physical theatre, and incredible storytelling," said the Lord Mayor.
The signature image for the Season 2018 marketing campaign is from Newcastle artist Angela Tarlinton, who has captured in her photo Girl at the Bogey Hole the exhilarating sensation that is to open your arms and embrace new creative forms and ideas.
Civic Theatre Manager Vanessa Hutchins invites Newcastle theatre lovers to take the plunge.
"Civic Season 2018 will host major companies including Bangarra Dance Theatre, Sydney Dance
Company and Opera Australia," said Burcham. "The Season includes distinctly Australian storytelling in productions such as Letters to Lindy, Who Am I…?, and Which Way Home, while The Orchid and the Crow and Prize Fighter share very personal stories of remarkable individuals."
"With Prize Fighter, we will also be taking a production outside the traditional confines of the theatre, staging this show, which combines an engrossing story with the visceral thrill of live boxing, to TUFF 'N UP Gym in Newcastle West."
Hutchins said there is also an increased commitment to local artists with the Civic co-presenting a new contemporary performance work That Place in Between by local choreographer Cadi McCarthy, which will be shown to Newcastle audiences before it tours.
Civic Theatre will also support the creative development of a new play by local playwright Dr Ray Kelly, Gurri Thurr-aye. This is a significant investment in the creation of artistic work in Newcastle, which will also have the capacity to travel to other places.
Bringing national and international creative work into Newcastle remains important as well and the Spiegeltent will be back in Civic Park with a London hit Blanc de Blanc, featuring the finest cabaret and acrobatic talent from around the world.
Our commitment to younger audiences continues with Monkey Baa's Josephine Wants to Dance and The 78-Storey Treehouse - Andy and Terry's newest and biggest treehouse ever.
"We are delighted to invite the community to dive in this Season to our bold new contemporary works and conversations while also reconnecting with old friends and some of Newcastle's favourite companies," said Vanessa Hutchins. "There is something for everyone, from adventure to escapism. Grab a friend or the family and join us to experience the best in live performance."
