Bumper week and year for Novocastrian seniors
02 Mar 2017
Novocastrians of a finer vintage will be busy over the next week with twice as many events organised for Seniors Week 2017 -- from today to Sunday 12 March.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes launched the line-up of 75 recreational, educational and cultural activities -- up from 36 last year -- at Nobbys Surf Club this morning.
From the ComputerPals for Seniors Newcastle Expo on Monday to a breakky and surf with the Steel City Malibu boardriders on Sunday 12 March, there's something for everyone aged 55 and over.
The launch follows the release of Newcastle City Council's 2017 Seniors Directory, an annual guide of clubs and facilities that can help seniors stay physically active and socially connected.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said this year's directory included 80 groups and services, up from 50 last year.
"I encourage senior citizens to get out and stay involved with the community through clubs and groups," the Lord Mayor said.
"Community groups are the backbone of any suburb.
"They provide social networks and invaluable services and generate trust and leadership that contribute to making our city great.
"The directory and seniors week itself are ways council can support and encourage community-based clubs, voluntary organisations and local charities and provide free year-round promotion.
"We know the clubs require hard work by volunteers and that it's getting harder to keep them running. Whether it's caring for heritage, coming together for a surf or creating art in the city - all of this takes organisation, fundraising and the need to welcome new members.
"That's why the Seniors Directory also includes tips on how to raise funds and attract sponsors."
