Extra council services for Newcastle 500

Newcastle City Council has rostered on more than 120 extra staff to cover the Newcastle 500 event weekend.

This includes extra rangers, food inspectors, waste collection crews, parks crews, lifeguards, parking officers and communications officers.

Council staff will also have a presence in the Government Coordination Centre.

"The eyes of motor-racing fans across the world will be on our city for this landmark event," Interim CEO Jeremy Bath said. "Our staff will on the ground and on-call to ensure Council's services throughout the city run as smoothly as possible."

An extra 600 waste bins have been placed in areas surrounding the race precinct and will be emptied twice daily from Friday to Sunday, with the exception of additional bins at the beach, due to accessibility issues for waste trucks while the event takes place.

Bins inside the race precinct will be emptied by Supercars Australia, not Council.

"Hunter Surf Life Saving clubs usually patrol beaches on the weekend, together with our lifeguards on Saturdays, but this Sunday we'll also provide lifeguards at Newcastle Beach and Nobbys Beach," Mr Bath said.

Lifeguards are rostered on at each location, including Newcastle Ocean Baths, and more are on-call if crowds require them.

Council will have four two-person parks crews - one at Stockton - to patrol parks and other public areas to make sure they're clean and looking their best.

Road crews will also be on duty to respond to any issues with Council-managed roads.

Mr Bath said additional staff would be available as required on an on-call basis.
