Jets live site in King Edward Park

Novocastrians who missed out on a ticket to Saturday evening's Hyundai A-League Grand Final at McDonald Jones Stadium can still enjoy the historic night at a family-friendly live site in King Edward Park.

Newcastle City Council has teamed up with Revitalising Newcastle and Newcastle Grammar School to screen the match on a high-tech screen in the park's natural amphitheatre.

Food stalls will cater to hungry fans and shuttle buses will run between the live site, Queens Wharf and Bar Beach carpark.

Newcastle Transport bus services will also operate between Customs House, Westfield Kotara and Wallsend from 5pm until late Saturday night in support of the celebrations.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Revitalising Newcastle Program Director Mick Cassel have called on Novocastrians to dine out in the city before making their way to The Hill for the 7.50pm kick off.

"Saturday night is going to be such an amazing night," the Lord Mayor said. "I urge people to come into the city wearing their best red and blue.

"The City's annual Carols by Candlelight draws around 15,000 people to King Edward Park's natural amphitheatre, so it will be a great, safe place for families to enjoy this historic sporting event.

"With 3,000 people expected to attend Newcastle Grammar's Concert in the Park centenary celebrations earlier in the evening, there will already be a legion of Jets fans there, so a big thank to Newcastle Grammar School and Head of School Erica Thomas for collaborating with us on this event at short notice."

Mr Cassel said Newcastle had another great opportunity to show what it has to offer, with 30,000 people to pack McDonald Jones Stadium and thousands more expected to soak up the atmosphere at Council’s live broadcast in King Edward Park and beforehand in the CBD and Honeysuckle.

“Revitalising Newcastle is encouraging locals and visitors alike to make the most of the occasion by coming in to the city centre while it’s buzzing with grand final fever to eat, drink and shop," Mr Cassel said.

“Our team has been in contact with city centre businesses offering promotional support and encouraging them to take advantage of Council’s brilliant live-site initiative, which will bring a festival feel to the CBD.

“With around 150 businesses participating in the My Newy Passport promotion, including 55 bars, cafes and restaurants, we’ll also be at Newcastle Airport handing out passports and letting visitors know they can win an overseas holiday by heading to town while they’re here.”

If you are heading to the grand final live site at King Edward Park on Saturday night, there are free shuttle buses operating from various locations throughout the city centre from 2pm until late. The buses will run every 15 mins and there are two routes operating
