Super support for community fun day

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes has hailed Saturday's Supercars event success as a sign of what's to come.

The Foreshore Park Community Day to allow Hunter residents to buy tickets for the inaugural Newcastle 500 drew a crowd of 10,000.

"Supercars Australia in collaboration with Destination NSW and Newcastle City Council will deliver the season-finale race to Newcastle in anticipation of overwhelming support from the wider Newcastle and Hunter community," the Lord Mayor said.

"Saturday's crowds are the strongest indication to date of widespread enthusiasm for this event.

"Direct economic benefits from visitors and spectators will be bolstered by a television broadcast of our city to more than 200 million people worldwide.
