Cycleway projects

We are always working on expanding and improving our network of cycleways with projects in various stages of planning, design and construction.
Current projects include:
- Chinchen and Hubbard Streets, Islington (R6 - Newcastle City to University, Callaghan)
We are currently constructing a new cycleway and shared footpath that will connect users travelling to and from the Scholey Street rail bridge in Mayfield, through to Islington Park and on to the city center. This important 665-metre stretch of the R6 Regional Route is expected to be completed in May 2025. - Glebe Road at Park Avenue traffic signals (R1 – Newcastle City to Belmont and Swansea)
A project to install traffic lights at the intersection of Glebe Road and Park Avenue will include controlled crossings for cyclists. - Broadmeadow to Newcastle West cycleway (R5 – Newcastle City to Wallsend)
We are investigating options to improve the section which passes over Donald Street Bridge to complement already completed upgrades from Beaumont Street to Selma Street. - Richmond Vale Rail Trail and Shortland to Tarro Cycleway
The Richmond Vale Rail Trail is a proposed shared path from Hexham (Newcastle LGA) to Pelaw Main (Cessnock LGA) primarily along a former rail corridor. Environmental assessment and concept design has been undertaken for a shared path from Shortland to Tarro (mainly on the Hunter Water pipeline alignment) in conjunction with the Richmond Vale rail trail.
