Glebe Road, Adamstown - safety improvements

HeroImage

Construction work on Glebe Road and Court Street, Adamstown is now complete. This follows the installation of new traffic lights and other safety improvements at the intersection of Glebe Road and Park Avenue.

These upgrades aim to reduce vehicle crashes and improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists by providing an improved connection to local schools, Adamstown Train Station, bus stops, local businesses, and enhance the link between the city and Fernleigh Track.

The below works were including as part of the safety improvements:

  • Kerb and footpath upgrades on the southern side of Glebe Road between Park Avenue and Wood Street
  • Renewed drainage in the area
  • Cul-de-sac arrangement in Court Street
  • Road resurfacing, kerb and cycle ramp and concrete pavements
  • Utility investigation work
  • Rail corridor underbore works for conduit installation
  • Installation and commissioning of the traffic lights during a scheduled Sydney Trains rail shutdown, as coordination of the traffic lights and the existing rail level crossing signals (boom gates) was required
  • New median strip and pedestrian fencing
  • Asphalt works, linemarking, and signage installation.

Read our media release from January 2025 when we commenced the intersection works.

Upgrades to improve safety for everyone

Now the traffic lights are operational, the new cul-de-sac in Court Street will allow eastbound traffic to turn left into Court Street, travel around the cul-de-sac and proceed through the intersection on the next green signal. This will assist eastbound traffic on Glebe Road to access the Adamstown area.

This change to traffic flow replaces the right turn at Wood Street, which has been removed to improve safety (to read more about this go to our FAQs below).

This project is joint funded with the Australian Government Black Spot Program.

Next steps

Now that this project is completed what's next?

  • Transport for NSW will continue to monitor the new traffic light operation with the rail level crossing signals (boom gates)
  • We will continue to advocate for the Lower Hunter Freight Corridor, a 30-kilometre dedicated freight rail line from Fassifern to Hexham. This project would see freight trains move around the western side of Lake Macquarie and would greatly improve traffic congestion at this intersection.
