Cottage Creek bridge replacement, Hunter Street

Did you know there is a bridge under Hunter Street in Newcastle West? You might drive over it every day and not realise.

The Cottage Creek bridge is actually over 120 years old, and plays an important role in both flood management and traffic movement in and out of the CBD.

We have been inspecting and assessing the condition of the bridge on a regular basis as part of our Asset Maintenance Program. At each inspection we gather information on the condition of the structure – both above and below, as well as the approaches to the bridge.

We have been investigating options for the replacement of the bridge, so we can deliver a solution that is fit for purpose moving into the future in this busy section of Hunter Street.

In early 2024 Council endorsed a proposal to acquire two properties adjacent to the bridge due to the potential impact to the use of the buildings and their structure during replacement of the bridge. Consultation with the owners of 679 and 685-687 Hunter Street is underway.

Update - August 2025

We are seeking expressions of interest from experienced contractors to design and construct a replacement bridge and channel lining, in conjunction with Hunter Water. Timing for construction is not yet confirmed and will be scheduled once the design is finalised and construction methodology established.
