Message from the Lord Mayor
As summer approaches, now is a great time to get out and explore the natural beauty and public facilities on offer across Newcastle.
Enjoying the water is easy in our city with five inland pools, which have been refreshed and upgraded with safety improvements, extensive re-painting, and maintenance of pool tiles and promenades, as well as shaded tiered seating structures at several pools and a new shaded playground at Beresfield.
Our lifeguards are back on duty at all our patrolled beaches and Merewether Ocean Baths, ready to ensure the community enjoys the warmer weather safely.
We’re also working hard to upgrade more recreational and open spaces for our community as part of another record $137 million capital works program in 2023/24.
This includes investing $19.7 million into new and improved parks, playgrounds, sporting and aquatic facilities, while also making it easier for people to get around Newcastle with $3.6 million for new cycleways and $1.2 million to extend our city's footpath network.

Investing in our people Shanden Mills is completing a dual apprenticeship in landscaping and arboriculture as part of CN's Trainee and Apprentice program, based at its Kotara Nursery. We're committed to creating local jobs for our community by investing in the next generation of tradespeople, technical and frontline staff. We've doubled our 2024 intake of apprentices and trainees, with 18 roles across sectors including greenkeeping, civil construction, carpentry, heavy vehicle mechanics, information technology, customer service and digital marketing. The new recruits will begin their careers with us in January next year, bringing our total number of current apprentices, trainees, graduates and undergraduates to more than 50. | Playground upgrades on the way Families from across the region make the most of the facilities at the Wallsend Active Hub. We're giving families more reasons to visit their local park with a $1 million investment into upgraded playground equipment and new amenities. Rawson Park at Stockton, Adamstown No.2 and Waratah's Coolamin Reserve will receive new equipment as part of our annual improvement program, while Islington and Lambton Park playgrounds will be upgraded with new rubber softfall and equipment respectively, with construction expected to start in early 2024. We've also enhanced the experience of visiting Newcastle's largest playground, with new toilet amenities at the Wallsend Active Hub. |
Flood improvements for busy road
Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen, City of Newcastle Assets Coordinator - Stormwater Ben Lovell and City of Newcastle Asset Engineer Luke Jaszczyk view the stormwater upgrade.
We've just completed a $5 million stormwater upgrade that will significantly reduce the risk of flooding at University Drive, Waratah West.
The major thoroughfare to the Mater Hospital and University of Newcastle was notorious for flooding due to overflows from Boatman Creek.
We've now replaced the 100-year-old brick culvert affecting the capacity of the creek, which will reduce the risk to motorists and nearby properties during major rain events.
A new cycleway pedestrian bridge was also constructed above the stormwater channel as part of the project to provide continued access for students and the community.
