Dropping in to enjoy renewed coastal precinct

Summer is a great time to drop in and enjoy the next stage of our landmark Bathers Way coastal revitalisation project, which has transformed South Newcastle Beach into a vibrant hub for community activity.

The upgraded shared pathway provides a more accessible connection between Shortland Esplanade and King Edward Park and forms a key link in the Bathers Way coastal walk.

We've installed new seating, shade and viewing areas along the upper and lower promenades, as well as exercise equipment, new accessible amenities and an inclusive skate bowl and terrain park for skaters, scooters and riders including wheelchair athletes of all skill levels.

Splashing out on our inland pools

Around 450,000 people visited our five inland pools last year and with the weather heating up we're expecting another bumper summer ahead.

We completed a busy program of maintenance and upgrades during the winter closure to prepare for the return of swimmers, including safety upgrades, extensive re-painting, and maintenance of pool tiles and promenades.

Bathers will also enjoy the benefits of new heat pumps and solar matting at the Mayfield and Wallsend pools ahead of this season, while next year we'll replace the solar heating system at Beresfield pool as part of a NSW Government grant.

The upgrades will help regulate the water temperature during the cooler months of the swimming season, which runs for 30 weeks each year.

Inclusivity at heart of Gregson Park playground upgrade

New accessible play equipment at Gregson Park, including a six-metre-high climbing tower and a balance obstacle course.

Families across Newcastle are flocking to our new playground at Hamilton’s historic Gregson Park, following the completion of a significant upgrade.

The inclusive playspace celebrates Indigenous traditions with a bush tucker garden and yarning circle to encourage knowledge sharing, while the area also includes nature-based play options and a fitness station.

The play equipment offers something for all ages and abilities including a six-metre-high climbing tower, trampolines and a balance obstacle course, as well as a sandpit with waterplay.

Additional shade, seating, and upgraded accessible amenities are also features of the project.

Renewal of Georgetown's village centre begins

We've kicked off a multimillion-dollar upgrade designed to enhance the safety, accessibility and amenity of Georgetown's neighbourhood shopping precinct.

The first stage will improve access to the existing bus stop for commuters with accessibility needs, as well as help reduce driver speeds.

The following stages will make it easier to safely navigate the precinct on foot with new pedestrian refuges on the busy Georgetown Road, while drainage improvements and underground utility work will help prepare the precinct for broader rejuvenation.
