Community Recycling Centre now open at Summerhill

A new Community Recycling Centre (CRC) opened today in Newcastle, where householders in the region can drop off problem wastes such as paints, oils, gas bottles, e-waste and batteries for free.

Newcastle City Council established the CRC at its Summerhill Waste Management Centre supported by a $115,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the new CRC complements Council's existing recycling services and is designed to help minimise waste and increase recycling in the community.

"I'm proud Council has offered free problem waste drop off centres for many years and is expanding to offer this additional service at Summerhill.

"This facility at Summerhill makes recycling problem wastes much more convenient for residents and these initiatives are part of our vision to be a liveable and sustainable city," said the Lord Mayor.

The Community Recycling Centre at Summerhill is part of a network of 100 facilities being established across NSW under the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.

Newcastle's Community Recycling Centre is located at Minmi Road, Wallsend, and is open Weekdays: 7.30am - 5pm; weekends and public holidays: 9am – 3pm (closed Good Friday and Christmas Day).

The CRC accepts the following problem wastes for free:

• water-based and oil-based paints
• used motor oils and other oils
• lead-acid and hand-held batteries
• gas cylinders and fire extinguishers
• conventional tube and compact fluorescent lamps
• smoke detectors
• E-waste and mobile phones
