Replacement pines planted on Foreshore

05 June 2018

Work crews have planted the first replacement Norfolk Island Pines in Foreshore Park near Nobbys Beach.

The first four of 55 mature Norfolks went in this morning after being trucked from a Central Coast nursery, where they reached an advanced state of growth.

Twelve trees will be planted over the next few days on the northern side of the amphitheatre near the Nobbys roundabout before seven larger trees are planted in the Customs House area next week.

"It was great to see these new mature Norfolk Island Pines going in to create a more inviting space for people visiting Foreshore Park," Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

"The staged planting program will eventually create an improved, greener and more user-friendly public space.

"This is just the first stage of plantings that will also include broad-leafed lilly pillies, coastal banksias, native hibiscuses and kentia palms throughout the Foreshore precinct.

"Once fully grown, the trees will provide 20 times more shade than was previously available."

Trees in stage one will also be planted around the new Wharf Rd car park and on the northern side of Wharf Rd adjacent to Horseshoe Beach Rd.

The planting program consists of 236 new plantings, including 55 new Norfolk Pines along Wharf Road and Nobbys Road.

Additional plantings will take place as the plants become available and when conditions best suit.
