West End
We are working to enable a safe, liveable and accessible precinct in the west end of Newcastle's city centre.
Creating a safe, accessible precinct around the Newcastle Interchange with vibrant streetscapes will facilitate greater use of active transport, and improve the experience for those who come to work or visit this emerging services-based area.
The West End Stage One Public Domain Plan, adopted in March 2018, outlines plans to:
- Develop Birdwood Park as a place for civic and cultural events with a pedestrian plaza, open green spaces and café or public amenities.
- Expand Little Birdwood Park to better integrate with Marketown Shopping Centre.
- Deliver new pavements and a green streetscape, ideal for small scale markets and festivals, for Parry Street west of National Park Street.
- Renew National Park Street.

The West End Stage Two Streetscape Plan was adopted in July 2019. This plan provides a strategic guideline for the design and implementation of public domain works within Newcastle’s west end.
This plan provides many improvements to the streetscape including:
- Uniform footpaths improving accessibility and ease of walking.
- Increased opportunities for pedestrians to cross Hunter Street.
- Increased numbers of street trees.
- Landscaped gardens, and the creation of alfresco dining areas.
- Cycleways.

Features include traffic upgrades, separated cycleways, new green spaces and public plazas, installation of ‘rain gardens’ to protect our rivers and creeks, and an extensive tree and groundcover planting plan to reduce the ‘urban heat island’ effect.
