Sportsfield upgrade, Smith Park, Hamilton

We have delivered a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the popular Hamilton North sportsground.

As part of our Strategic Sports Plan (2020), a masterplan for Smith Park has been developed to ensure that proposed works are consistent with the long-term vision of the park and meets the needs of all user groups.

The masterplan aims to develop a staged and flexible multi-use precinct to meet the recreation and sporting needs of the surrounding community, and enhance the visitor experience for players, officials, and spectators.

The masterplan was developed in consultation with local sporting user groups and the community in 2022 and was endorsed by City of Newcastle’s Sport Infrastructure Working Party in early 2024.

The masterplan will be implemented in stages over a 10 year period, with stage one works completed in April 2025.

Smith Park's playing surface has been significantly improved following City of Newcastle's delivery of a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the Hamilton North site.

We're proud to have worked closely with the community and sporting groups to improve this 56,000 sqm park.

This project contained a significant scope of works. Drainage improvements include 13 new stormwater pits, more than 330 metres of stormwater lines and more than five kilometres of subsoil drainage lines.

Irrigation upgrades feature a new pump station, two water tanks and more than 3.7 kilometres of irrigation lines with sprinklers for watering.

These improvements represent stage one of the Smith Park Masterplan and are consistent with the long-term vision for the park, meeting the needs of all users including Hamilton Azzurri Football Club, junior and senior cricket, and Newcastle Oztag.

The upgrade was delivered by City of Newcastle with support from a $2.56 million grant secured by the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association through the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Stage two of Smith Park masterplan will be delivered separately in future works programs, and will include:

  • Community / facilities building.
  • Upgrade of the Parkside Avenue carpark.
  • Footpath connecting car park to fields and amenities.
  • Upgrade and formalising of existing landscaping along Boreas Road.
  • Multi-sports court and lighting.
