Renewal works on Fernleigh Track Tunnel

Rich in history, the Fernleigh Track existed as a railway line in the 1890s, transporting coal from the mines in Lake Macquarie to the Port of Newcastle. From coal hauling to one of the Hunter region’s most popular shared pathways, it is a city jewel that we are committed to maintaining to ensure it can continue to be enjoyed and experienced by users for generations to come.
Fernleigh Tunnel renewal works complete
We’ve successfully completed important maintenance and renewal works on the Fernleigh Tunnel, a much-loved feature along the Fernleigh Track.
Guided by our annual engineering inspection, these works were undertaken to ensure the longevity, functionality and continued use of this valued community asset.
The improvements included:
- Supporting the iconic brickwork with steel mesh
- Repairing water damage
- Removing graffiti and applying a protective anti-graffiti coating
These upgrades strengthen the tunnel's structure and preserve its historic character, while helping ensure the Fernleigh Track remains an accessible and welcoming space for all who walk, ride or run.
Thank you to the community for your patience and cooperation during the works.
