Parkway Avenue cycling and safety improvements

We're creating a safer, more welcoming Parkway Avenue for everyone.
Upgrades to the two roundabouts at Smith and National Park Streets, along with new on-road cycle lanes on Parkway Avenue in Hamilton South will create safer, more comfortable journeys for everyone travelling through the area.
Why are we doing this?
Since 2019, there have been eight crashes at the intersections we are upgrading, including four involving cyclists. These upgrades will make the intersections safer by slowing traffic, improving visibility, and adding safe crossing points.
The project aligns with our 'On Our Bikes' Cycling Plan (2021-2030) and will support future cycleway connections to the Foreshore, creating a more connected, accessible city for everyone.
The project was informed by community feedback during the engagement period in 2024.
What does the project involve?
Key changes include realigned kerbs, new shared path crossings and off-road cyclist bypasses. These upgrades will make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to move around safely and confidently.
We've worked carefully to retain the heritage character of Parkway Avenue and its beautiful tree-lined median. No Norfolk Island or New Caledonian pines will be removed as part of this project.
What's the latest?
Works are expected to commence in August 2025 (weather permitting). We'll notify nearby residents and share more information and regular updates throughout the project on this webpage.
The project is expected to be completed in early-2026.
We thank you for your patience while we deliver this vital infrastructure.
How is the project being funded?
The project is joint funded with the Australian Government Black Spots Program, which targets locations with a history of crashes to help prevent future incidents.
