What are Priority Weeds

In New South Wales, invasive weeds are managed under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015

Weed species that are considered a serious risk to the environment, economy, or public health; and that can be controlled effectively are listed as "Priority weeds". Unlike common exotic species such as Lantana, and Privet; "Priority weeds” are still relatively uncommon in the landscape.

Newcastle’s Invasive Species Team is working hard to keep it that way, using vigilant surveillance and best-practice treatment methods to contain and reduce priority weeds across our region.

See the Hunter Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan 2023 – 2027  for more information.

Your Role in Protecting Newcastle

Under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015, all landholders and community members have a General Biosecurity Duty.

This means taking all reasonably practicable steps to prevent, eliminate, or minimise the biosecurity risks posed by invasive weeds on your property and in your local area.

Whether you're a land manager, gardener, or recreational user, your actions matter.

Stay informed, report weed sightings and work together to protect our shared environment.

You don’t have to do it alone. Our Invasive Species Team can help you by:

  • Identifying problem weed species
  • Recommending tailored management strategies
  • Connect you with community support programs
