Electric Vehicles & Charging Stations

HeroImage

We have a growing number of electric vehicles (EVs) registered in and visiting Newcastle, which helps create a cleaner, quieter and lower emissions city.

The roll-out of public EV charging infrastructure is a key deliverable in the Newcastle Environment Strategy and an important way that we are supporting existing and future EV drivers.

The chargers are powered by 100% renewable energy from City of Newcastle's Summerhill Solar Farm and a power purchase agreement with the Sapphire wind farm.

Use this page to find EV charging locations, parking restrictions and payment information.

Where to charge your EV

City of Newcastle owns and operates 53 EV charging bays across Newcastle including:

  • 6 fast charging bays (45-60 kW DC) in Newcastle West, Hamilton and Georgetown
  • 32 mid-speed (22 kW AC) charging bays in Beresfield, Wallsend, Lambton, Adamstown, Mayfield, Wickham, The Hill, Newcastle West and Newcastle
  • 15 commuter (7 kW AC) charging stations in Stockton, Newcastle East and Newcastle.

Several private companies have also installed public chargers on the kerbside, in shopping centre carparks and at accommodation providers across Newcastle.

EV parking rules and restrictions

Only EVs that are actively charging can park in designated EV charging bays. Designated bays feature an EV-only logo painted on the road surface and have ‘EV-only whilst charging’ parking signs. Non-EVs, as well as EVs that are not charging while parked in a designated EV charging bay, may be issued with a parking penalty notice. Please be courteous to other EV drivers and move your vehicle as soon as charging is complete.

Parking time limits apply to EV charging bays, irrespective of whether your charging session is complete. Please check the signage at each location. If you exceed the time limit, you may be fined.

Note: Our chargers at Stockton ferry wharf, and at Foreshore Park in Newcastle East are designed for use by commuters. In these locations we recognise that your car may finish actively charging whilst you are at work. Idle fees do not apply at these locations.

Charging costs and how to pay

The following fees are for the EV chargers owned and operated by City of Newcastle.

  • The cost for our fast (45 kW – 60 kW) chargers is $0.60/kWh.
  • The cost for our 7 kW and 22 kW chargers is $0.40/kWh in areas subject to paid parking, and $0.30/kWh for all remaining areas.
  • If you are charging in a designated EV charging bay within a paid parking area, you currently only need to pay for charging, not parking.
  • Payment can be made via the Chargefox app.

Note: the updated charging costs from 1 July 2025 brings our pricing closer to the industry average, helping to support a competitive market for EV infrastructure. It also ensures we can sustainably maintain and grow NSW's largest council-owned and operated EV charging network.

Accessible EV charging

CN supports EV owners with accessibility needs by considering bay size, slopes, gradients, and the provision of ramps and safety features when planning for and delivering public EV charging infrastructure. Additional circulation space has been provided at our Georgetown and Hamilton fast chargers, and our Laman Street Newcastle site.

Where EV charging bays have a time-based restriction, Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) holders can park for longer periods, in accordance with Transport for NSW rulings outlined below.

Signposted time limitMPS permit holder parking limit
More than 30 minutesUnlimited
30 minutesUp to 2 hours
Less than 30 minutesMaximum 30 minutes

Note: A MPS permit does not allow a non-EV to park in an EV only parking area, or to park an EV while not actively charging.
