What's happening at Georgetown Local Centre?
We are improving the look and feel of Georgetown Local Centre. Our proposed upgrades will enhance the safety, accessibility and look of the centre while respecting the area’s charm and character.
The upgrades aim to:
- Create public space for socialising and outdoor trade by widening footpaths, upgrading street furniture, and building a new plaza space
- Improve accessibility, safety and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists, plus improve driver visibility and safety, by upgrading road infrastructure, footpaths, and crossings
- Beautify the natural environment by planting new street trees and refreshing landscaping
- Improve underground infrastructure by installing a new water main and stormwater drainage
These upgrades will benefit both businesses and residents – delivering a safer, more attractive place to visit, that attracts visitors and presents an alternative to large shopping centres with access to an EV charging station.

Early works were completed in 2024 and in September 2025, we started construction on the Streetscape works associated with this Local Centre Upgrade. Read more below about each stage of works.
Early works were completed in 2024, and were focused on supporting the existing 40km/h zone with new speed control devices like kerb extensions and traffic calming to improve safety through the local centre.
Additional entry infrastructure was also installed at 35 Moate Street, and 30 and 76 Georgetown Road, to support these works.
As part of City of Newcastle's commitment to supporting the growing number of EV drivers who live in and visit Newcastle, two 60kw charger ports were installed at 33 Moate Street.
Streetscape works got underway in September 2025, and are focused on enhancing the safety, accessibility, and look of the centre while respecting Georgetown's charm and character.
Key improvements during this phase of works include:
- Upgrading underground assets, including a new watermain and stormwater drainage
- Renewed road surfaces and better footpaths for easier walking and access
- Upgraded street furniture
- More green space with new street trees and refreshed landscaping
We understand how important it is to keep Georgetown moving during construction. That's why we've staged these works to ensure local traffic and business can continue to operate, and safe pedestrian access is maintained throughout the project.
For a more detailed view at what this stage of works includes, take a look at the below image. You can click it to open up a more detailed version.
Plaza works will include a new public plaza at the intersection of Moate Street and Georgetown Road.
We see this as a vibrant, flexible space for locals to gather, relax, and connect. The plaza will support local businesses and the village atmosphere, and also improve safe cycling access between Asher and Parkview Streets.
We’ll be inviting the community to help shape the final design of the plaza. Earlier consultation showed that residents value Georgetown’s strong sense of community and want to see it enhanced with high-quality public spaces, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering.
