Sea Hare Event

Merewether Ocean Baths are currently closed for swimming due to the presence of sea hares in the water.

Following advice from marine experts, we plan to begin draining and cleaning Merewether Ocean Baths on Tuesday 13 May, with the aim to reopen for swimming later that day.

We have observed that some sea hares have actively started moving out of the Baths, making use of the higher tides.

Before pressure cleaning starts, we’ll manually remove sea hare eggs where possible. We will be doing this in a careful way to maximise egg survival.

We thank the community for your patience as we’ve taken a precautionary approach to support marine life.

We will provide further updates on this page and the City of Newcastle Facebook page as they become available.
